RI Weather: First Snow To Hit Evening Commute

New Englanders know how to drive in the snow, right? But some forget. State police are warning motorists to beware of slippery roads.

NARRAGANSETT, RI—It's the first snow — and undoubtedly not the worst snowfall — of the new season. But it's expected to hit during the evening commute, and the first snow traditionally brings lots of accidents, spinouts, and crashes. State police are warning drivers not to go too fast. The officers are anticipating slippery roads, and they're urging people to leave extra space between cars, use their lights, and clear the frost off the windshield.

The National Weather Service says the storm will hit Rhode Island around 4 p.m. Thursday and last until 1 a.m. Friday. Besides snow and sleet, rain and wind are in the forecast. Plus, there's a flood watch for the Pawtuxet, Pawcatuck and Wood rivers. The coast will see little accumulation, but the forecast calls for one to three inches in the interior.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THURSDAY TO 1 AM
EST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
expected along with a period of sleet/ice pellets. Winds gusting
as high as 35 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of southeastern Massachusetts and northern and
southern Rhode Island. This includes the cities and towns of
Taunton, Brockton, Plymouth, Fall River, New Bedford,
Mattapoisett, Foster, Smithfield, Providence, Coventry, West
Greenwich, East Greenwich, Warwick, West Warwick, Bristol,
Narragansett, Westerly, and Newport.

* WHEN...From 4 PM Thursday to 1 AM EST Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The
hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery
roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
