Newport Man Charged With Second DWI

Steven A. Truss, 36, of 14 John H. Chafee Boulevard, Apt. #3, Newport, was arrested at about 8:04 p.m. on Dec. 2 and charged with drunken driving second offense and cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, an officer monitoring traffic on Route 1 south near Hampton Way clocked a Volkswagen Jetta driven by Truss at 78 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. A traffic stop was made near the South Kingstown Public Services Building.

Police said when they asked Truss why he was going so fast, he allegedly told them, “Because my life sucks.” Police said Truss smelled of alcohol, and mistakenly believed that he was headed toward the Jamestown Bridge.

According to police, Truss failed field sobriety tests and was arrested as a result. He was processed and then released at about 10:09 p.m., after refusing to take a chemical breath test, police said.

Providence Man Treated at ER, Charged With Drunken Driving

Craig E. Woods, 50, of 173 Glenbridge Ave., Providence, was arrested at about 10:37 p.m. on Dec. 2 and charged with drunken driving, and cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, on the night of Dec. 1 at about 10:22 p.m., dispatchers received a report of a silver Nissan Maxima swerving and driving erratically. The caller was following the car, and police were able to catch up to it near Broad Rock Road on Route 138.

Police said the car was traveling at 26 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. A traffic stop was made near Redwood Drive.

According to police, Woods smelled strongly of alcohol, and he failed field sobriety tests. As a result, he was arrested and transported to headquarters for processing.

However, according to police, at around midnight Woods complained of chest pains, and collapsed in his cell. Police said he was transported to South County Hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, Woods was issued a summons, and told he would need to return to police headquarters for processing upon his release from the hospital. According to police, Woods did so on the night of Dec. 2, and he was released at about 11 p.m.
