SK Police Log: February 2, 2013

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Narragansett, SK Police Clear House of Hoarder

At about 11:09 a.m. on Jan. 31, South Kingstown police were asked to held assist Narragansett police with clearing a house of a hoarder on Arbeth Avenue in Narragansett.

According to police, a court order was enacted to clear the property because of public health and safety concerns. Police noted that garbage and unsalvageable items filled almost every portion of the house, and overflowed into the yard as well.

Police also noted that the house had been vacant for several months because of the order, because it was deemed inhabitable, and no progress had been made on clean-up. As a result, the building inspector responded with a seven-man crew and began removing items, putting them into a dumpster for disposal, until the house was up to code.

According to police, one of the homeowners attempted to stop the disposal as it was going on, but police repeatedly mentioned the judge’s order. The homeowner left, and the rest of the house was cleared without incident.

Exeter Man Charged With Huffing Aerosol Canisters

Sean Hopkins, 29, of 251 Main St., Exeter, was arrested at about 5 p.m. on Feb. 2 and charged with huffing illegal substances.

According to police, they received a call from employees at the Wakefield Mall of a man who had passed out on a bench and urinated on himself. Police said they responded to the area and found Hopkins, who matched that description.

Police said that based on conversations with Hopkins, he shoplifted several cans of compressed air from Staples and used them to get high at the mall. He was arrested without incident.

According to police, Hopkins was processed without incident and refused multiple medical evaluations. Police said that because he no longer seemed to be impaired, he was released at about 6:09 p.m.

Police noted that later that night, they were notified by North Kingstown police that Hopkins had been arrested on similar charges in their town. North Kingstown police said Hopkins had stolen aerosol canisters at Walmart and used them to get high. South Kingstown police added this report to their files.

Three Cited for Alcohol Violations

At about 1:20 a.m. on Feb. 2, police cited three teenagers and University of Rhode Island students for alcohol violations:

• Sean M. Duffey, 18, of 313 7th St., Watervliet, NY, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.
• Jon Augustine, 19, of 92 Wabun Ave., Providence, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.

According to police, officers received a noise complaint about a party on Fortin Road. Police said as the party dispersed, they estimated the crowd at about 150 to 200 people.

Police said that while dispersing the party, Duffey and Augustine were seen with alcohol, and background checks revealed they were under 21. Both were cited as a result.

Cumberland Teenager Charged With License, Alcohol Violations

Tyler Diedrich, 19, of 27 Oak Ridge Road, Cumberland, was arrested at about 7:43 p.m. on Feb. 2 and charged with driving with a suspended license, and cited for transportation of alcohol by a minor.

According to police, an officer noted a Chevrolet Malibu traveling at a high rate of speed on High Street. A traffic stop was made near Kingstown Road and Rodman Street.

Police said the driver of the car – Diedrich – had a suspended license, based on an unpaid speeding ticket in August 2012. He was arrested without incident.

According to police, while speaking with Diedrich, two cases of beer and two bottles of vodka were clearly visible on the backseat of the car. When neither he nor a passenger in the car would claim ownership, Diedrich was also cited for transportation of alcohol by a minor.

Police said Diedrich was processed at headquarters and then released at about 9 p.m. The passenger was given permission to drive the car from the scene.
