SK Police Log: November 29, 2012

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

South Kingstown Woman Charged With Drunken Driving

Marilyn L. Parent, 58, of 509 Red House Road, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 12:07 p.m. on Nov. 29 and charged with drunken driving and cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, they received a report of an erratic driver on Route 1 south, near the South County Commons. Police said the caller, a 41-year-old South Kingstown man, followed the driver until police were able to catch up to the vehicle near East Matunuck.

Police said the vehicle was drifting between lanes on Route 1, and then on Post Road after it exited Route 1. A traffic stop was made as a result on Post Road.

According to police, while speaking with Parent there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from her breath and from the interior of the car. Police also noticed a small bottle of Sutter Home white zinfandel in the side pocket of the driver’s side door.

Police said that when asked for her license and registration, Parent initially handed them a AAA card. She allegedly told police she didn’t drink, and when asked about the bottle of wine, she told police it was her daughter’s.

According to police, Parent failed field sobriety tests, and as a result, she was arrested and charged with drunken driving.

Police said that during transport to headquarters, Parent told them, “I took a bunch of pills.” When police asked her what kind and how many, she told them, “30.”

As a result, she was transported to South County Hospital for treatment. She was treated, processed at police headquarters and then released at about 3:15 p.m.

Police said an inventory of Parent’s car revealed two sealed 187-mililiter bottles of Sutter Home white zinfandel, one partially full bottle of the Sutter Home, and one empty 50-mililiter bottle of Smirnoff Raspberry Vodka. The alcohol was confiscated and disposed of.

South Kingstown Man Charged With Felony Possession of Marijuana

Shane P. Vazquez, 25, of 88 Dam St., South Kingstown, was arrested at about 9:40 a.m. on Nov. 29 and charged with possession of marijuana third offense, which is a felony.

According to police, an officer familiar with Vazquez from previous arrests saw him driving on Liberty Lane at a high rate of speed. After Vazquez allegedly drove though a stop sign without stopping, a traffic stop was made on Kingstown Road, in the 2000-section.

Police said the car smelled of marijuana, and when asked about it, Vazquez provided police with a baggie and a medical marijuana patient card.

However, police noted that after a search of the car, there was about seven ounces of marijuana in the car, which exceeded the legal limit of 2.5 ounces. The marijuana was confiscated as a result, and Vazquez was charged.

Police processed Vazquez at headquarters and he was transported to Fourth Division District Court for arraignment at about 2:54 p.m.

South Kingstown Man Arrested for Warrant

Curtis J. Hicks, 56, of Church Street in South Kingstown, was arrested at about 6:45 a.m. on Nov. 29. Police said a Fourth Division District Court warrant was out for Hicks’ arrest.

According to police, they received a report of a man sleeping behind a fence on Main Street. Police said a background check of the man – Hicks – revealed a warrant out for his arrest.

Police said Hicks was arrested without incident, and he was later transported to the ACI.
