4th Arrest for SKHS Student for Domestic Offenses

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Matthew K. Sklarski, 18, of 44 Mulberry Drive, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 and charged with three counts of violating a no-contact order. Police said Sklarski is a student at South Kingstown High School.

According to police, the neighbors of an 18-year-old South Kingstown woman called them, complaining that Sklarski and the woman were arguing with one another again. The neighbors told police that they were aware of the no-contact order between Sklarski and the woman.

Police said that when they initially responded, Sklarski was in his car and parked at the South County Commons movie theater, away from the complaining witnesses on Grande Brook Circle. Police said Sklarski denied seeing the 18-year-old.

According to police, as they were clearing the scene, they saw the 18-year-old driving away and crying. A traffic stop was made at the Commons.

The victim told police that she and Sklarski were still dating, and she had invited him over earlier in the day to return a few things. However, she said he then returned later in the day and began an argument with her, which her neighbors witnessed.

The victim told police that Sklarski did not assault her, but police noted that she had a bag of frozen corn in the car, and had a small cut on her right finger, which she claimed was self-inflicted from punching her own hand.

According to police, a passenger in the car said that she didn’t like Sklarski, or his relationship with the victim, but didn’t witness or hear the argument because she was in the victim’s home at the time.

Police said they interviewed the neighbors, who said Sklarski and the victim were arguing loudly outside of her apartment. The neighbors said Sklarski picked up the victim at one point, while she yelled, “Matt, put me down, don’t carry me that way.”

The neighbors said that in response, Sklarski told the victim, “Be quiet, that guy is on the phone calling someone.” The neighbors said the victim then got free from Sklarski’s grasp and ran away, at which point Sklarski got in his car and left.

Based on the witness statements from the neighbors, Sklarski was arrested without incident. He was held for arraignment at Fourth Division District Court at 9 a.m. on Jan. 31.

Sklarski has three previous arrests, stemming from contact and incidents with the same victim:

• On Nov. 19, Sklarski allegedly assaulted the victim at Jim’s Dock, according to police reports. The victim was 17 at the time, and a no-contact order was enacted at about 12:25 a.m. on Nov. 20, as a condition of Sklarski’s bail. Sklarski was released, but according to police, texted the victim several times, and as a result, he was re-arrested at 7:30 a.m. and arraigned at Fourth Division District Court.
• On Dec. 22, police were called to the apartment of the victim after receiving reports of an argument, and a sound similar to a fist hitting a wall. Police said Sklarski was at the apartment, which violated the no-contact order, and he was arrested again. For that report, click here.

As of Monday morning, details of Sklarski’s upcoming court cases were unavailable because of online judicial records being down, thanks to the blizzard.
