Student: Maybe Dad Crashed My Car

URI Student Charged With License Violation After Abandoning Car – Suggests Dad Crashed the Car

Martin T. Lannan, 23, of 39 Cypress Ave., Narragansett, was arrested at about 9:26 a.m. on March 6 and charged with driving with a suspended license. Police said Lannan is a student at the University of Rhode Island.

According to police, at about 7:30 a.m. on March 1, they received a report of a car driving over the lawn of a Chestnut Avenue home. The homeowner estimated that the crash had happened at about 1 a.m.

Police said the driver abandoned the car, and as a result, it was towed from the scene. Police said a search of the nearby area revealed Lannan and another man walking on foot.

According to police, when they asked the men about the accident, both refused to identify who was driving. Lannan allegedly told police, “It’s my father’s car, maybe he was driving.”

Police said Lannan and the other man were uninjured. They were both told that the car would be held until the driver came forward, due to the property damage. Police called the car’s registered owner – a family member of Lannan – who told them that Lannan was the usual driver of the car.

According to police, on March 6 Lannan filed a report at police headquarters, and told police he was driving that night. As a result, he was arrested because his license had been suspended, stemming from a South Kingstown police drunken driving charge in 2011.

Police said Lannan was processed and then released at about 10 a.m. Depending on the outcome of a court case, a restitution hearing for property damage to the yard and home on Chestnut Avenue is planned.

Warrant Arrests

- Alexander T. Coburn, 21, of 30 Montauk Road, Narragansett, was arrested at about 4:48 p.m. on March 6. Police said Fourth Division District Court and Third Division District Court warrants were out for his arrest.

According to police, an officer familiar with Coburn from past arrests saw him walking on Kingstown Road. A background check confirmed that warrants were out for Coburn’s arrest.

Police said the officer confirmed Coburn’s identity and arrested him without incident. He was transported to the ACI at about 5:24 p.m.

According to police, the warrants stemmed from Coburn not appearing at a court hearing on Feb. 6 related to a North Kingstown police charge of shoplifting, and at a Feb. 25 probation review for a South Kingstown police charge of resisting arrest.

- Melanie J. Paolozzi, 60, of 24 Lakeview Drive, Narragansett, was arrested at about 2 p.m. on March 6. Police said a Fourth Division District Court warrant was out for her arrest.

According to police, Paolozzi was aware of the warrant out for her arrest and turned herself in at headquarters. She was processed and then transferred to court at about 2:47 p.m.
