90 Years Later, Civil War Vet Finally Gets a Gravestone

A ceremony on June 6 will honor the former prisoner of war and true American hero who for 90 years, had no gravestone in Elm Grove Cemetery in North Kingstown.

On June 6 at 6 p.m., members of the community are invited to come pay respects to a man who is a true American hero.

John S. Babcock was buried in an unmarked grave at Elm Grove Cemetery in 1924 and never received a gravestone.

A veteran of the Civil War, Babcock fought at the age of 19 and was taken as a prisoner of war, suffering injuries in battle.

Thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, Babcock is finally resting in a place with a proper marker. His new gravestone was installed this month — 90 years after his death.

It's now time for a solemn and respectful service for a man who finally no longer rests anonymously here in North Kingstown.

To get to the cemetery, stop at 954 Tower Hill Road. Look to the right side of the cemetery to find the red maple tree. Beyond the tree is a tall monument with a ball on top. Babcock's grave is located here.
