Health Department Orders NK Dentist To Stop Doing Root Canals

Paul Boscia was cited after complaints about shoddy and unnecessary procedures.

The Rhode Island Department of Health has ordered dentist Paul Boscia to immediately stop performing root canals. Boscia practices dentistry from an office at 320 Phillips Street in North Kingstown.

According to Health Department findings, following complaints from July 3, 2012, and Aug. 6, 2013:

  • Boscia failed to make diagnoses or made incorrect diagnoses, including the failure to diagnose obvious tooth decay over a three-year period.
  • He did not provide comprehensive treatment planning.
  • He failed to adhere to minimal record keeping standards, including charting of existing conditions and periodontal disease charting.
  • He did not refer or suggest referrals to a specialist when circumstances warranted.
  • He did not communicate endodontic (root canal) outcomes when such outcomes could compromise their prognosis.
  • He failed to get appropriate patient consent forms.
  • He failed to use methodology set out established in 2010 by the American Association of Endodontists.
  • He performed substandard root canals.
The Health Dept. said Boscia, a graduate of Boston University School of Dentistry, cannot perform any more root canals "until such time as he successfully completes a 'hands on' dental university course in proper root canal therapy." In addition, Boscia must complete university courses in diagnosis, treatment planning and record keeping.
