Lafayette Road Closing For Bridge Work

The road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting next week.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Lafayette Road will be closed during the daytime hours where it passes underneath Route 4 starting next week. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said the closure is required to complete much-needed repairs on the overpass, which is classified as structurally deficient.

The road closure will be in place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting June 25 and lasting approximately two weeks. During the closure, traffic will be detoured along the Hatchery Road Bypass to Route 2, then Route 102, while traffic heading in the opposite direction will follow the same detour in the reverse order.

The road closure will allow for accelerated bridge work on the $6.4 million Route 4 overpass project. During construction, crews will install steel beams on temporary supports on both sides of the bridge. Long-term construction will continue to replace the bridge, though road and lane closures are not planned during traffic-heavy summer months.
