Smith's Castle's 2020 New Docent and Greeter training sessions will be starting soon.

For over 70 years, dedicated volunteers at North Kingstown’s Smith’s Castle have been inspiring local school children and visitors from throughout the world with tales of our earliest Rhode Island history. To continue that tradition, this award-winning historic house is in need of docents and greeters for the upcoming tour season. Docents in colonial attire interpret Castle history through 50-minute tours of the two-story 1678 house from May through mid-October. Greeters provide an important first contact with the public, staffing the Visitors’ Center to welcome guests and collect admission fees. All volunteers are encouraged to participate in the Castle’s Adult Education Programs and public events throughout the year.

On Thursday, April 16, 2020 and on three consecutive Thursdays from 3-5 pm, veteran docents will prepare docent trainees to conduct future tours through on-site presentations about the Castle’s features and history and its place in the Rhode Island colonial story. While potential greeters are only required to attend the first and last sessions, where there will be an emphasis on procedures and methods, they are welcome to attend all four meetings. Assistance in assembling appropriate costuming will be provided; a limited amount of colonial wear is available on loan.
