North Kingstown Police Tell Residents To Beware Of Phishing Scams
The recent scam asks residents to purchase a debit card over the phone for charity, payment of an old bill or ransom.
NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — North Kingstown police are urging residents not to purchase any debit cards over the phone during unsolicited calls.
Police said the recent scams involved residents being contacted and asked to buy cards to pay for an overdue bill, to donate to charity, to pay an IRS bill, to play for an emergency medical procedure or to pay a ransom on a family member.
Police said no legitimate agency will ever ask for payment via a prepaid gift card.
