Obituary: Herbert "Barney" W. Barnes, 80

Herbert W. "Barney" Barnes, 80, longtime resident of North Kingstown, passed away Sept. 21, at his home. He was the husband of Rosalind F. (Braga) Barnes for 58 years. Born Aug. 21, 1933, in Syracuse, New York, the son of the late Herbert T. Barnes and Kathleen A. (Ryan) Hawk.

He joined the Navy in 1952, serving 20 years as a hospital corpsman. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University in 1980 receiving a B.A. in Business Administration.

Barney loved sports and was an avid Red Sox fan. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William M. and his wife Pamela of Warwick, Denis R. and his companion Johanne of North Kingstown; his granddaughter Kathleen M. of Warwick; his brother, J.B. Barnes and his wife Susan of Brackney, Pennsylvania; and his dog Sophie. Mr. Barnes was predeceased by his son Richard E. Barnes. 

Funeral service is Friday, Sept. 27 at noon at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Burial with military honors will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, North Kingstown. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.
