Joseph P. Garrity, Jr., 81, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Thursday, December 19, at St. Elizabeth Home. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn E. (Cahalan) Garrity. Born in Springfield Gardens, Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Garrity, Sr., and Catherine M. (Conway) Garrity.
Mr. Garrity was a firefighter in the City of Providence for many years until his retirement in 1988. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church and a member of the Exeter Golf Club. He enjoyed reading, golfing, sports, and traveling.
Besides his wife, he leaves his loving children: Catherine M. Berndtson of Cranston; Kevin M. Garrity, Sr. of North Kingstown; Brian J. Garrity of Preston, Conn.; and Terrence J. Garrity of Cupertino, Calif. Cherished grandfather of Shannon Bloom, Bethany Berndtson, Kevin M. Garrity, Jr., Kyle J. Garrity, Desiree Smart, Kassandra LaRoche, Emily Garrity, and Elizabeth Garrity and great-grandfather of Taylor King, Jacqueline Morgan, and Maia Smart.
His funeral will be held on Monday, December 23, at 8:45 a.m. from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A off I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Francis de Sales Church, 381 School Street, North Kingstown. Burial with full military honors will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to “The First Tee,” 425 South Legacy Trail, St. Augustine, Fla. 32092 (www.thefirsttee.org) will be appreciated.
