Odeum and Experiments in Theater Offer Camp Scholarship

The Greenwich Odeum and Experiments in Theater are pleased to announce the establishment of a Summer Theater Camp Scholarship! Thanks to Rally Sound and Adam Ezra Group, Experiments in Theater and the Odeum kicked off their scholarship campaign at the Adam Ezra concert on Saturday, November 23, 2019. The Odeum/Experiments in Theater Summer Theater Camp Scholarship will cover the cost of tuition for one summer camp applicant per year who, otherwise, would not be able to take part in the camp.

Led by Valerie Remillard of Experiments in Theater, the annual summer theater camp at the Odeum is a two week program that culminates with a full scale production. The program is modeled after a professional summer stock schedule but is appropriately scaled back to suit the ages of the participants, which historically ranges from 7 to 15.

Since the Odeum’s revival in 2015, Experiments in Theater has produced four youth theater productions in collaboration with the Odeum, School House Rock Live, Bugsy Malone Jr, Once on this Island, Jr and, most recently, 42nd Street Young Performers Edition.

“Every year is my new favorite production!” Says Ms. Remillard. “I teach theater in a variety of different settings and communities but the program I run at the Odeum is the most challenging project I direct all year long. It’s a tight schedule but I still keep my expectations really high and push everyone to exceed what they thought they could accomplish. It’s incredibly rewarding!’”

Ms. Remillard isn’t alone at the helm. She has two assistant directors, college students, who raised their hand when Remillard was looking for staff, and 5 additional team members who are still in high school and were invited to join the team after demonstrating their exceptional talent and leadership in prior years when they participated in the program as campers. Every production team member has a specific leadership role, a corresponding title and everyone receives a stipend for their work.

Remillard adds, “Adam Ezra Group and RallySound are committed to charity, community awarenesses and activism. We are proud to have been acknowledged by a musical act whose objective is to empower communities through music and we are grateful that we are now able able to supplement our program with a scholarship opportunity for kids who would otherwise be shut out from taking part in the program due to financial constraints."

The Odeum/Experiments in Theater Summer Theater Camp Scholarship is open to applicants ages 8 and up. To apply, write a one page letter expressing your need for financial support and why this summer camp opportunity is important to you and/or your child. Mail it no later than May 1st to The Odeum Summer Theater Camp Scholarship, Greenwich Odeum, 59 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI 02818. In your letter, please specify who the scholarship is for, the age of the participant and any previous experience in theater.
