RI DOT: North Kingstown Stony Lane Bridge Project Set To Begin
Lane shifts and possible closures will be required on Route 4 as part of preservation project scheduled to start Sunday night.
NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Preservation work on the Stony Lane Bridge in North Kingstown is set to begin late Sunday night. The RI Department of Transportation's work on the structurally deficient bridge will include possible lane closures on on the bridge and Route 4 between Exit 3 and Exit 5 with travel delays expected.
The work will be done in both daytime and nighttime shifts. The work will begin with lane closures possible on the bridge. This will be followed with a series of lane shifts and possible closures on the highway below extending into the end of the year.
The closures will take place, weather permitting, for pavement milling during the night and paving during the day. Only one lane of travel may be open at the bridge in either direction at times.

Rumble strips in the shoulders will be put in place next week ahead of the first series of lane closures set for Sunday night. Early on Monday, all lanes will be shifted to the right.
The RI DOT said the temporary traffic pattern will remain in place until late fall prior to two more phases of lane shifts. The original travel lanes are expected to be restored next summer.

Work is scheduled for different portions of the bridge, doing steel and concrete repairs, replacing bridge joints and repaving when done. This work will improve the bridge's condition, removing its structurally deficient status.
The Stony Lane Bridge was built in 1988 and carries 61,000 vehicles per day, according to the RI DOT. The work is part of an 11-bridge project in North Kingstown and East Greenwich.
