North Kingstown Youth Lacrosse won two state titles this past weekend at the University of Rhode Island, the girls’ 5/6 team and the boys’ 5/6 Division I team. Both teams won their final games to receive the crown of state champion.
The girls’ 5/6 team celebrated the first time in history a North girls’ team has won a state title. They defeated a tough Cranston team 12-11 with an outstanding come from behind win. “The game was a total team effort, we worked so hard all season. We were down at the half and our coach told us we could do this, we had the skills. We stayed positive and kept cheering each other on and communicating. The win was one of the most amazing feelings of triumph in my life,” said Ava Sardelli, 6th grade. Sardelli scored the first goal for NK and the team was fired up. With the support of her strong defensive teammates, Amelia Knowles defended the goal exceptionally well against the number one seed. Ellie Bishop played an incredible second half along with the attack and middies. They scored several goals and brought home the victory.
The boys’ 5/6 Division I team played amazing lacrosse to defeat their rival East Greenwich 6-4. “The win felt amazing, and if it weren’t for every person on the team absolutely hustling to the max, we wouldn’t have been there. Our last two games were our best of the season, and they both felt so awesome. Especially the last win. I still can’t grasp that we are state champions,” said Cam Danchak, 6th grade. The game began with a quick goal from Will Kornacki and the team kept their lead throughout the game. Incredible goal tending from Johnny Green, with the help of the defense, allowed North to maintain the lead throughout. A coast to coast goal by defenseman, John Rodehorst gave the team a 2 goal lead. The attack and middies played a solid game with smooth passing, speed and pure teamwork.
