Woman Ordered to Probation for Machete Threat

Kelly Anne Sherman, 26, is ordered to serve three months probation after pleading to domestic charges related to a machete.

Kelly Anne Sherman, 26, of 425 Broad St., Cumberland, pleaded no contest on Dec. 14 to North Kingstown police charges of domestic disorderly conduct and domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone.

Superior Court Associate Justice Melanie Thunberg ordered Sherman to serve six months probation, to complete domestic abuse counseling and to pay $430 in assessments. In return for her plea and proof of Sherman entering a mental health program in October, an additional charge of domestic felony assault was dismissed.

According to North Kingstown police reports included in court files, in April they received a 911 call from a 56-year-old North Kingstown man on Lenox Court that Sherman was threatening him with a machete.

Police said when they arrived, Sherman and the man – a family member – had disengaged. The man told police that Sherman had been upset while arguing with him and had threatened him with a machete, and in return, he had held a metal baseball bat in defense against her.

According to police, based on Sherman’s mental state at the time of her arrest, she was transported to the emergency room at Kent County and treated. She was arrested the following day after not turning herself in to police headquarters.

Based on online records, Sherman has one previous arrest. In June 2012, she pleaded no contest to a North Kingstown police charge of domestic vandalism, stemming from an incident in January 2012. In return for her plea, additional charges of domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct were dismissed.

According to online records, Sherman was ordered to serve a year of probation, to pay restitution and court costs, and to complete domestic abuse counseling. Sherman allegedly violated her probation – the felony arrest in April – and served about 57 days at the ACI as a result.
