Applications Open For Portsmouth Citizens Police Academy

The 10-week program will run from March 10 to May 12.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Applications are now open for the 2020 Citizens Police Academy in Portsmouth. The 10-week program, which begins in March, "allows citizens to learn and experience the inner world of law enforcement, and a provide a firsthand look at the daily operations of the Portsmouth Police Department," the department said in a release.

The program will include both classroom instruction, demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities. Instructors will include patrol officers, supervisors and adminstrators from the Portsmouth Police Department. Covered topics will include:

  • Uniformed Patrol
  • Crime Scene Investigations
  • Accident Investigations
  • Traffic Codes
  • Harbor Patrol Functions
  • Domestic Violence
  • DUI Enforcement
  • Firearms Safety
  • Mock Crime Scene Scenarios

The academy is open to anyone ages 18 years or older who live or work in Portsmouth and have no prior felony convictions. It will run from March 10 to May 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Applications can be picked up in person from the police station or downloaded off the department's website.
