Avoid Melville and Almy Ponds: State Health
The green algae has returned to the ponds in Portsmouth and Newport, according to the state Department of Environmental Management.

PORTSMOUTH, RI—Blue-green algae has returned to the ponds in Portsmouth and Newport, according to the state Department of Environmental Management. A bloom has been spotted in Melville Pond, in Portsmouth and in Almy Pond in Newport. DEM and the state health department warn this algae is poisonous, and the water is dangerous for people and animals. That means people should not fish in these ponds or allow pets to drink water from them or swim in them.
"All recreation, including fishing, boating, and kayaking, should be avoided," the state says.
The advisory stays in effect until further notice.
