Man Dies After Jump Off Mount Hope Bridge

Police said a 50-year-old Dartmouth man died over the weekend after jumping off Mount Hope Bridge.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Several police and fire departments were called to aid in a water rescue Sunday afternoon following reports that a man jumped off the Mount Hope Bridge. A 50-year-old man from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, was later pulled from the water in Mount Hope Bay. He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Around 11:45 a.m., someone called 911 and reported that a person jumped from the center span of the bridge. The Portsmouth police and fire departments, along with Bristol police and the Bristol Harbor Master assisted in the search of the water.

The Rhode Island Medical Examiner's office is investigating the incident.
