National Grid Ready To Start Big Project On Aquidneck Island

The company is holding a public meeting in Portsmouth to answer questions about the project, which is being undertaken to improve service.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — National Grid is building two new transfer stations on Aquidneck Island, one on Connell Highway in Newport and one on Jepson Lane in Middletown.

On Tuesday, the company will hold a public meeting to answer questions. The meeting is set for 6 to 8 p.m. in the Portsmouth High cafeteria.

Clearing land for the Jepson substation was set for the middle of March. National Grid is also replacing transmission lines to the Dexter Substation in Portsmouth and swapping out 69 existing poles with 94 new and taller ones along the 4.1 mile right of way between the Dexter and Jepson substations. The average height of the existing poles is 54.5 feet; the new poles on average stand 89 feet, and the tallest is 95 feet.

The company also plans to retire the Vernon, Bailey Brook, North Aquidneck and South Aquidneck substations.

Work upgrading transmission lines on Newport streets is to continue.
