The play is a comedy in three acts, featuring a hilarious ensemble of characters representing the embarrassing, yet loving, family of Alice Sycamore. The family faces a dilemma when a very successful banker makes plans to purchase every building within a 12-block radius in an attempt to put a competitor out of business, though Grandpa Vanderhof, the patriarch of the family, refuses to sell. Interestingly enough, Alice becomes romantically involved with the banker's son, Tony Kirby, and the two families must settle their differences and work together in order to come to an understanding while preserving the loving connection between their children. The question soon becomes which of the two families is truly the more wealthy and whether happiness and love outweigh the value of commas in a bank account, as you simply cannot take monetary gains and financial success with you.
