Portsmouth Ocean View Changing With Dismantling Of Cooling Towers

The plant has has been prominent from Portsmouth beach horizons since the mid '60s, especially from McCorrie and Sandy Point beaches.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — The view at Portsmouth beaches will change in the coming months because of the dismantling of the Brayton Point cooling towers in Somerset, Massachusetts.

The Brayton Point facility have been prominent from Portsmouth beach horizons since the mid '60s, especially from both McCorrie and Sandy Point beaches. The facility became more noticable when the cooling towers were put up in 2009.

Dismantling has already begun since the Fall River Herald reported Brayton Point LLC owners obtained a demolition permit on Sept. 23.

According to a Facebook post from Fall River Development News, the view from the Fall River waterfront will become "more pleasing to look at in the near future."

The Brayton Point facility was once one of the largest fossil-fuel power plants in New England. It has since closed down in 2017.
