Portsmouth Patriots Drop First Game To North Kingstown 56-14

The Patriots will try to rebound when they face off at home against Barrington High School September 14. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A size disadvantage was something the Portsmouth Patriots would have to overcome, Head Coach Matt Kestler said before the football team's home opener last Friday against North Kingstown. The Patriots just couldn't match up though losing in by a lopsided 56-14.

Portsmouth struggled from the beginning as it didn't take long for the Skippers to find the end zone. The first drive went 66 yards in only five plays and ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Gabe Sloat.

Struggles continued for the Patriots quickly. They fumbled on the next drive, which eventually led to another touchdown run for Sloat.

Despite the one-sided score, Portsmouth did its best to find some life in the passing game. Quarterback Kyle Bicho went 19 for 30, passing for 227 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

It just wasn't enough to match North Kingstown's offensive attack, especially in the running game. North Kingstown scored on eight of their nine possessions. They had two players with over 100 yards rushing and another with over 75.

"We need to be able to handle adversity a little better when things don’t go our way," Kestler told Patch. "We are moving forward from here and are excited to get into our league."
