PORTSMOUTH, RI — Your kids might not want to admit it, but the end of summer vacation is almost here, and the first day of school is coming up fast. As you enjoy your last weeks at the beach and start back-to-school shopping, here are five dates to know headed into the new school year.


  1. First Day of School: September 3. Portsmouth is one of the few school districts in Rhode Island that starts after Labor Day.
  2. One-Hour Early Release: September 18, October 16, December 11, February 12, April 22, May 20
  3. End of First Quarter: November 5
  4. Veteran's Day: A professional development day on Friday kicks off an extra-long weekend from November 8 to 11.
  5. Thanksgiving Recess: November 27 to 29.
