Portsmouth Woman Charged After Dog Dies In Hot Car

Emily Foley, 41, is facing charges of unnecessary cruelty to animals and illegal confinement of an animal in a vehicle.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A Portsmouth woman was arrested after her dog died in a hot car. Emily Foley, 41, is facing charges of unnecessary cruelty to animals and illegal confinement of an animal in a vehicle.

According to Portsmouth Police, Foley ran errands with her children and dog earlier in the day on Monday, returning to their Union Street home around 2 p.m. Approximately three hours later, they realized the dog, a four-year-old golden retriever, was not in the house and that it was still in the car.

The family ran to the driveway, where they tried to revive the dog, who was unresponsive. Police arrived a little while later and pronounced the dog dead. Portsmouth Animal Control Officer Elizabeth Futoma removed the body of the animal from the scene.

Foley was arraigned in Second Division District Court in Newport on Tuesday afternoon.
