Rhode Island Weather Forecast: Flash Flood Watch

A flash flood watch has been issued ahead of a slow-moving storm with possible torrential downpours.

A flash flood watch has been issued for all of Rhode Island and the eastern half of the state ahead of a slow-moving storm that is expected to spend a few days lingering over the region.

The flash flood watch, in effect from Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night, has been called for Barnstable, Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth,Suffolk, and Worcester Counties in Massachusetts.

Periodic showers and embedded thunderstorms are expected to be joined by "pockets of localized torrential rainfall," the National Weather Service said Tuesday afternoon. Rain could fall at 1-2 inches per hour, meaning localized flooding is a real possibility.

Northwest Massachusetts is at risk of severe weather as soon as Tuesday night. Excessive rainfall is expected, with hail a possibility. Forecasters are even allowing for the slight possibility of a tornado in Western Mass.

Another mammoth hurricane has the southeastern U.S. in its sight. Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm with wind gusts as strong as 185 miles per hour, is moving toward Florida.
