Several Aquidneck Island Beaches Closed To Swimming

The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing beaches in Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth due to high bacteria counts.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — As Rhode Islanders look forward to a sunny weekend after nearly a full week of rain, it may not be a beach weekend after all at several Aquidneck Island hotspots. On Thursday, the Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing four beaches in Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport due to high bacteria counts.

The department recommended the closure of Sandy Point Beach in Portsmouth, King Park Beach in Newport and Third Beach and Peabody's Beach, both in Middletown.

"RIDOH will continue to monitor and review beach water quality regularly to ensure safe bathing throughout the summer season. The status of a beach may change on a daily basis," the department said in a release.
