The fatal fire broke out on Lucy Street Tuesday afternoon and quickly spread to neighboring homes.

PROVIDENCE, RI—A fire at a Providence home on Tuesday claimed the life of a 7-year-old girl and caused a 2-year-old girl to suffer from life-threatening injuries, said Providence police.

The fire broke out inside the multi-family home on Lucy Street at approximately 1:30 p.m. The two girls were found unconscious on the second floor and rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where the 7 year old died from her injuries, according to Assistant Fire Chief Michael Bates.

Approximately 59 firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze, which spread to two neighboring homes. Others were able to get out safely and no other injuries were reported.

“These are very emotional events. Most of our firefighters have youngsters as well, and combined with the holidays, it’s just such a challenge,” Bates told reporters. “When they show up, they want to do the best possible job they can and we always want a really good outcome, so it takes its toll.”

Approximately 14 people have been displaced as a result of the fire, said Mayor Jorge Elorza. The American Red Cross is assisting those who need shelter and resources.
