WATCH: Massachusetts' Last Coal Power Plant Demolished
The 500-foot cooling towers at Brayton Point Power Station were imploded. It was the last coal-fired power plant in Massachusetts.

SOMERSET, MA — A pair of 500-foot tall cooling towers at a coal power plant that closed in 2017 were imploded Saturday morning. The controlled demolition lasted less than 10 seconds with thousands of people watching along the waterfront of Somerset. Commercial Development Company, Inc., the new owner of the Brayton Point property is redeveloping the parcel into a wind power facility.
The Brayton Point Power Station was built in 1953 and commissioned in 1967. It was the last coal-fired power plant in Massachusetts. At its peak, it generated 1,600 megawatts for 1.5 million homes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and had 250 employees.
The company said it set a world record for the tallest cooling towers ever imploded.
