Coastal Medical Donates 49,500 lbs. of Food through RI Food Bank

Coastal employees raised funds to donate food through the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in an effort to end hunger in Rhode Island.

Coastal Medical employees recently raised funds to donate over 49,500 pounds of food through the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in an effort to end hunger in Rhode Island. Contributions from Coastal employees were matched dollar-for-dollar by the organization, which resulted in a donation of over $16,500. This was accomplished through Coastal’s Charity and Community Service Initiative, which formed in January 2019.

“Access to healthy food options is more important than ever this year,” said Shannon Boyd, the Charity Initiative Leader and Medicaid Accountable Entity Program Manager at Coastal Medical. “During these difficult times, the support of Coastal employees went above and beyond to truly make a difference in our community. We greatly appreciate their incredible generosity.”

According to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s annual Status Report on Hunger, one in four households in Rhode Island lack adequate food. The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes food to families and individuals in need through a statewide network of 168 member agencies, including food pantries, meal sites, shelters, youth programs, and senior centers. Each month 53,000 food insecure Rhode Islanders receive food assistance from these agencies.

“Due to the pandemic, we had to donate differently this year and it resulted in the most food we ever provided to those in need,” said Boyd.

Coastal’s Charity and Community Service Initiative has also donated backpacks with school and health supplies to patients in need at Coastal’s pediatric and family practices; helped build a safe and affordable home for a family in need in Woonsocket for Habitat for Humanity West Bay & Northern R.I. Inc.; and raised money to support Hasbro Children’s Hospital through RhodyTHON’s first annual 5k color run.
