Downtown Providence Skating Rink Renamed For BankNewport

The rink, formerly named for Alex and Ani, is officially open for the 2019-2020 winter season.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The skating rink in downtown Providence officially has a new name. Formerly known as the Alex and Ani City Center, the rink will now be known as the BankNewport City Center. The rink is officially open for the 2019-2020 season.

"Providence is growing as a regional and global destination due to our thriving culinary scene, historic architecture, vibrant arts community, and range of free and family-friendly activities," said Mayor Jorge Elorza said at the opening. "Whether you live in Providence or are just visiting, the Creative Capital offers something for families and people of all ages to enjoy."

The rink is open for skating every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and costs $7 for adults and $4 for seniors, children under 12 and veterans. Skate rentals cost $7 per person. Season passes are also available for $90 for adults, $250 for families of four and $50 for kids, seniors and members of the military. Special rates are available for groups, events and full-ice rentals.

"This truly is one of the happiest times of the year, and the opening of the Providence Rink is the kick-off to the start of our holiday season,"City Council President Sabina Matos said. "Providence is truly a special place and attractions like our rink, our shopping districts, and our amazing culinary scene make us a top destination for many. I look forward to bringing my family to the rink for some winter fun!"

Once again, ice bumper cars have returned to the rink, offering visitors the chance to bump and slide across the ice in specially designed cars. The bumper cars are available to rent in 15-minute sessions from Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $12 per person. Providence residents can get a 15 percent discount simply by showing their IDPVD.

Providence residents can also skate for free on the first Saturday of each month. Participants will still need to pay the $7 skate rental fee, and must show their municipal ID. $5 discounted admission is available to college students from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays, with a valid college ID.

City of Providence residents can receive free admission to the Providence Rink during the first Saturday of each month. Skate rental fee of $7 (tax included) is applicable and residents must bring valid identification or IDPVD. College students can also enjoy $5 discounted admission every Wednesday from 6:00PM until 10:00PM a valid college photo ID.

On Saturday, the rink will host a "Tree Lighting Skating Exhibition" from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The vent will feature free family-friendly activities, music, food and more, followed by a figure skating showcase at 6 p.m. Several Olympic medalists, including Nancy Kerrigan, will be at the event.
