PROVIDENCE, RI — More delays are expected on Interstate 95 in Providence, where lane shifts are already slowing down the high-traffic area. Over the next few months, a series of temporary traffic patterns will go into effect, allowing crews to replace the bridge deck on the Oxford Street bridge near Thurbers Avenue.
The first change will go into place next week, on June 28, when all southbound lanes will shift to the left. During this time, the lane shift currently in place on the northbound side will remain the same. Few delays are expected during this time and no exits or on-ramps will be affected.
In the middle of July, lanes will be split on both sides of the highway, allowing crews to begin replacing the bridge deck one lane at a time. Every two to three weeks, the lane split will shift to allow access to each lane. This phase of construction is set to be completed by the end of the summer.

The rotating lane shifts are expected to cause additional delays during morning and evening rush hours, when traffic is already heavy in the area. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said construction was purposefully planned for the summer months when there is generally less traffic. When planning to drive through the area, plan extra travel time and expect delays.
The Thurbers Avenue on-ramp will remain open throughout construction, though heavy delays are likely.
