With Heat Wave Coming, Providence Extends Pool Hours

In preparation for this weekend's heatwave, Providence's water play parks and pools will stay open longer than usual.

PROVIDENCE, RI — With a weekend of extreme temperatures ahead, Providence city officials have taken steps to make sure residents stay cool. All 13 of the city's water play areas and five public pools will have extended hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, both water play parks and public pools will be open from noon until 8 p.m., one hour later than they usually close. Both are free and open to the public.

  • Selim Rogers Recreation Center, 60 Camden Ave.
  • Zuccolo Recreation Center 18 Gesler St.
  • Davey Lopes Recreation Center, 227 Dudley St.

    • Al Carrington Water Park – at Richardson Park, 64 Richardson St., at the corner of Richardson Street and Prairie Avenue)
    • Billy Taylor Water Park, 124 Camp St., off Cypress Street)
    • Sackett Street Water Park, 110 Sackett St., across from Sackett Street Recreation Center
    • Harriet & Sayles Water Park, 375 Sayles St., at the corner of Harriet & Sayles Streets
    • General Street Water Park, 11 West Drive, off Admiral Street
    • George West Water Park, 1266 Chalkstone Ave., at the corner of Chalkstone and Mt. Pleasant Avenue
    • Fargnoli Water Park, 945 Smith Street, near Academy Avenue
    • Fox Point Water Park at Cabral Park, 505 Wickenden Street, next to Vartan Gregorian School
    • Neutaconkanut Recreation Center Water Park, 675 Plainfield St.,near Killingly Street
    • Wallace Street Park, 1 Wallace St.

    Throughout the weekend, cooling centers will be open to the public for those who do not have air conditioning, both city-sponsored and in non-city-owned locations. While cooling centers are generally not open on Sundays, there will be extended hours to accommodate the heat wave from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    The city's weekly Saturday mattress drop-off at 700 Allens Ave. has been canceled.
