North Providence Fire Displaces Family Of Six On Christmas

A fire that broke out at a home on Smithfield Road Friday night displaced four adults and two children.

PROVIDENCE, RI—A fire that broke out late Friday night on Smithfield Road in North Providence badly damaged a home and displaced six people, said North Providence Fire Chief John Silva.

Fire officials said everyone got out of the home safely and no injuries were reported, but all six residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

"The American Red Cross is helping one family – four adults – two children after a fire yesterday on Smithfield Road, North Providence," said a press release from the organization. "The Red Cross provided assistance to meet the family's immediate needs."

Firefighters said they believe the fire started in the attic and was accidental, but the cause remains under investigation.

"Around the holidays we always get some type of call, a fire call, this year is a little tougher because people are quarantined and staying home, and just to know that your home isn't here during the pandemic is a tough thing." Chief Silva told reporters.
