PROVIDENCE, RI — The Providence Bruins will honor Colby Cave's commitment to community service and helping those in need during his five years playing for the franchise with the Colby Cave Memorial Award.

Cave, who died in April of a brain hemorrhage, played for parts of five seasons with Providence and in 23 games with the Boston Bruins.

The award, which will be given out in partnership with the Cave family, will go to a player each season for his dedication to community service and charitable organizations.

Cave was an assistant captain at Providence where he appeared in 239 games, scoring 43 goals with 72 assists. In his 23 games in Boston over two seasons, Cave had five points on a goal and four assists.

He signed with the Bruins out of North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 2015.

"The Colby Cave Memorial Award is a special way to honor and remember Colby for his leadership qualities and humanitarian efforts," said Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney. "Driven and committed to be an NHL player, Colby was also uniquely unselfish with teammates and anyone that needed help.

"Emily, the Cave Family and the entire hockey world lost a great person who was beloved by everyone that was fortunate enough to spend time with Colby Cave."

The fund's proceeds go toward community programs with an emphasis on mental health activities and providing sports to underprivileged children.
