Providence Closes Down Salons, Gyms Amid Coronavirus Fears

City officials have already forced the closure of several noncompliant businesses, and will continue to do so, Mayor Jorge Elorza said.

PROVIDENCE, RI — In an effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus in Rhode Island, the city of Providence is ordering the closure of a variety of businesses and banning all gatherings of 10 people or more. The closures will go into effect at 5 p..m on Saturday and last until further notice.

The following businesses will be required to close:

  • Gyms, fitness centers, pools, health spas, fitness centers and health clubs
  • Hair salons and barbershops
  • Beauty salons, including nail, eyelash and tanning services
  • Tattoo parlors
  • Flea markets
  • Gatherings of any time with 10 people or more.

City police and officials have been enforcing Governor Gina Raimondo's order to close all dine-in services at restaurants and will continue to force the closure of those who are not in comliance, the city said in a release.

"This is a rapidly changing situation," the statement said in part. "As the state's recommendation to combat the spread of the COVID-19 evolves, the City of Providence will continue to evaluate the need to make additional changes to city services and operations."
