Rep. David Cicilline Vying For Assistant Speaker Of The House

The Providence Democrat is running against Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts. The vote could come as early as Wednesday.

House members will choose between U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts or U.S. Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island for a top leadership position as early as Wednesday.

Congressional Democrats are commencing virtual party elections this week. The highest-profile contested election is expected to be between Clark and Cicilline for assistant speaker.

Whoever wins will be the fourth-highest ranking member in the Democratic House. The three ranking members ahead of them are all in their 80s, providing added significance to this race.

Clark is already the second-highest ranking woman in Congress behind Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She is already an influential Democrat in Washington as vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

Cicilline, who lives in Providence, chairs the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
