School Bus Drivers On Strike In Providence
The strike started Thursday after Wednesday night's negotiations over retirement benefits fell through.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The union representing the city's public school bus drivers is striking after failing to reach a contract agreement Wednesday with school bus transportation company First Student.
The strike started Thursday after Wednesday night's negotiations over retirement benefits fell through.
Teamsters Local 251 business agent Nick Williams told the Associated Press that the union "went outside the box," but First Student "stonewalled" negotiators. First Student spokesman Christopher Hunter said the company is disappointed that the union is striking.

According to the Associated Press, the union also wants First Student to contribute to pensions. The bus company said drivers should participate in a 401(k).
During the first days of the strike, Providence public schools will consider any absences "excused absences."
