90's Alternative Rockers Reunite for National "Working Class Tour"

90’s alternative rock bands Sponge and The Nixons reunite for a co-headlining tour in December. The tour stops hits Providence on Sunday December 8 for a show at The Alchemy. This marks the first time the bands have toured together since 1997’s “Roar Tour” featuring Iggy Pop, The Reverend Horton Heat and Sevendust.

Both bands are touring in support of new singles. Sponge’s “Uber and a Fifth of Tequila” on Cleopatra Recordsfeatures guest vocals from metal core band A Word Alive’s Telle Smith. The Nixon’s latest track “Favorite Lies” is on Art of War Records.

Hailing from Detroit, Sponge gained widespread notoriety with their 1994 debut album "Rotting Piñata.”Hits like "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles)" fueled massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV in the late 90's. The disc was certified Gold and pushed Sponge into the international spotlight, remaining on the Billboard 200 Chart for 40 weeks.

Sponge has continued to tour and record - releasing 11 studio albumsincluding 2016’s “The Beer Sessions.” Mega radio host Howard Stern still cites Sponge as one of his all-time favorite acts, and recently had the band perform live on his highly rated Sirius XM show.

The Nixon’s breakout disc 1995’s “Foma” spawned hits “Sister,” “Happy Song” and “Wire.”Disbanding in 2000, the original line up of The Nixon’s reunited in 2018 for a series of sold out shows with the Smashing Pumpkins.
