Statement From Mayor Elorza On Calls From The Providence Teachers Union To End The State Turnaround Of Providence Schools
"The only reason I chose to bring in the state was to radically reform the contract."
March 30, 2021
“For decades, the children of Providence have been held hostage to a regressive and restricting PTU contract that protects adults at the expense of children,” said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “The only reason I chose to bring in the state was to radically reform the contract. We would be doing our kids a massive disservice if the district came back to the city’s control without first invoking the Crowley Act and making those radical changes. After that is done, I believe the city should have control of the district, sooner rather than later.”
