Police say Jeffrey McKay was the designated wheelman in a Providence armed robbery where shots were fired inside a convenience store.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Warwick resident who is accused of driving a getaway car for a Providence gunman has been indicted in connection with his alleged part in an armed robbery in the city of Providence.

A grand jury on April 28 indicted Jeffrey McKay, 24, on one count of first-degree robbery, three counts of conspiracy, and one count of eluding police in a high-speed pursuit.

Rivera on that night allegedly walked behind a store counter, fired a round into a cabinet, and pointed his gun at a clerk’s head. He allegedly stole money from the register and fired twice into the ceiling. Heading to the car, Rivera allegedly pointed his gun at a police officer. They say he fired again at the cop from the window as McKay sped away down Ruggles Street.

Police followed the car to North Providence where it crashed on Mineral Spring Avenue at the Route 146 on-ramp. Four people inside the car were taken in for questioning. Rivera and McKay were arrested and charged.

Rivera and McKay were each initially charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and single counts of first-degree robbery, conspiracy, using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle, and carrying a pistol without a license or permit.
