DCYF Corrects Press Release About 'Near Fatality' Of Child
The DCYF today said the girl who nearly died was from North Providence, not Warwick, as the agency previously reported.

WARWICK, RI — The Department of Children, Youth & Families this evening retracted a press release it sent out earlier in the day disclosing "near fatality "of a 5-year-old girl from Warwick. The girl is actually from North Providence, the department said in its corrected release.
The department had no prior involvement with the family, DCYF said.

The incident occurred on February 27. The department said it confirmed neglect was a contributing factor. Pursuant to state law, DCYF notified the Office of the Child Advocate.

DCYF cited confidentiality laws and said it would release no additional information.
Rhode Islanders are required by law to report known or suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to DCYF within 24 hours of becoming aware of such abuse or neglect, the department said, while providing its 1-800-RI-CHILD hotline number.
