RHODE ISLAND — The Rhode Island Division 1 high school boys ice hockey championship between Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendrickson was canceled due to a positive coronavirus case, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League said Friday.
The two teams were due to play a three-game series Friday through Monday. They were instead declared co-state champions.
"We congratulate Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendricksen on the outstanding seasons that brought them both to the title series," the league said on Facebook. "Furthermore, we applaud their tremendous display of sportsmanship in the face of a difficult season."

League officials met with the two school administrations Friday to discuss the positive case. Both schools agreed to cancel the series, the league said.
"The RIIL recognizes the reality and challenges of playing during the COVID-19 pandemic," the league said. "Unfortunately, some of our member schools have experienced COVID-related interruptions, and for some it has meant a premature end to their seasons."
