WESTERLY, RI — A 17-year-old was arrested Wednesday afternoon at Westerly High School and charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds.

A Westerly Police Department arrest and incident log from May 5 indicated that the teen was charged with possessing a firearm. However, Superintendent of Schools Mark Garceau says that's not accurate.

"While a weapon was turned into staff yesterday, there was no gun involved. There was also no threat to students or staff," Garceau wrote in an email to Patch.
