State Health Investigates Fruit That Sent Students To ER

An "allergic-type reaction" to fruit served in the schools sent several students to emergency rooms, the state health department said.

WOONSOCKET, RI—Kiwi fruit from West Greenwich is being associated with an "allergic-type reaction" that sent several students to emergency rooms on Friday. According to the state health department, 34 youngsters reported symptoms including hives, tongue swelling, and itching (of lips and mouth). Medical workers gave them antihistamines. All the students improved, the health department said.

Some were treated at school, while others went to emergency rooms.

But the exact cause of the students' symptoms is still unknown, the health department said.
