What's Open, Closed on Patriots' Day in Massachusetts
Monday is Patriots' Day, a state holiday in Massachusetts but not a federal holiday. Find out what to expect open and closed on the holiday.

Patriots' Day is Monday, April 17, in Massachusetts. It's not a federal holiday, though, It's also not a holiday in Rhode Island. Patriots' Day marks the the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the start of the Revolutionary War. It's also Marathon Monday. Here's a handy list of what's open (and closed) in the Bay State during the holiday:
- Supermarkets, liquor stores and convenience stores: Open
- Retail stores: Most open
- Bars and restaurants: Open
- Stock market: Open
- Town Offices: Closed
- State offices: Closed
- Federal offices: Open
- Public Library: Closed
- Public Schools: Closed. Monday marks the beginning of school vacation week.
- Post office: Open
- MBTA: All subway lines operating on regular weekday schedule with added service before and after the Marathon. On Marathon Monday, various bus routes on both the North and South sides will be detoured. Due to congestion, bikes are not allowed on any MBTA vehicles on Patriots' Day.
