WOONSOCKET, RI — The Woonsocket Bocce League is entering its 27th this spring, said the city in a news release.

The league, founded in 1993 by former Woonsocket Mayor Charles C. Baldelli, held its 2021 season opener at the bocce court at Bouley Field on Thursday, May 13. Sixty-four players, along with their families, friends, and other onlookers, joined the event.

League President David Mencarini said the opener was "a tremendous success with everyone having fun and a great time in the open air."

The Woonsocket Bocce League is open to men and women over age 50 from any community and there are currently vacancies for both "regular" and "spare" players.

Those who are interested in joining the league are encouraged to visit during the season to pick up a handout that explains the league's operations. Potential team members can also call Mencarini at 401-762-3145 or League Vice-President Armand Renaud at 401-766-8438.

Woonsocket Bocce League games are held Thursdays starting at 8:30 AM. Weather permitting, the 2021 season will last for 16 weeks, with playoffs set for the second week of August and an awards banquet scheduled for mid-September.

The league continues to follow COVID-19 safety protocols to keep players and onlookers safe.
