Woonsocket Cracks Down On Out-Of-Staters' Parking

Out-of-state registrations are being ticketed for parking overnight more than 30 days, the city said.

WOONSOCKET, RI—Police are handing out tickets to drivers parking overnight for more than 30 days, if they have out-of-state plates, the mayor's office said. Some 31 people were due at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal on Oct. 18 to answer citations, the city said.

"This fall sweep is a continuation of the police department's spring sweep which successfully
resulted in the issuance of 54 motor vehicle citations," said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. "The goal
is to more evenly distribute the motor vehicle tax burden among those who are currently paying
and everyone who should be paying."

Rhode Island law requires car owners to notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles within 10 days after they move and to provide the address where the car is being kept.

"Equal distribution of motor vehicle tax liability among City vehicle owners lessens the burden whereas evading payment of tax simply increases the burden," the mayor said.
