Daryl Sherman, a native of Woonsocket, loves to bring her fabulous vocal and piano stylings back home, usually with some other terrific jazz and blues performers. On Saturday, June 16, she’ll be returning to Chan’s on Main Street for two sets, along with renowned tenor saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Marshall Wood.
Chan’s Jazz and Blues Club has been a Rhode Island institution for more than 30 years and has played host to some of the world’s greatest performers in the music world. One of them, considered to be the greatest trumpeter of all time, Dizzy Gillespie, played Chan’s with his entire band in 1988. As a matter of fact, Dizzy had a favorite dish at Chan’s that brought him there on a detour to the airport after a performance at Bryant College. John Chan relates that story and more in a chapter of Shadowing Dizzy Gillespie, a book by another Woonsocket native, David G. Brown (available at Amazon). Chan also did a beautiful oil painting of Dizzy and his "signature bent horn."
Daryl’s June 16 set at Chan’s will start at 8:00 p.m. Ticket information is available at http://www.chanseggrollsandjaz... or by calling (401) 765-1900.
